Inversions & Hand Balances

You have a comfortable headstand practice and are ready to explore & unlock a full range of variations to experience a million-dollar feeling this leaves in your mindbody—and you want to have fun doing it…

Inversions & hand balances require alignment, control, and aligned technique. Without these, you’re left relying on strength & endurance, and this limits your practice.

Once you’ve mastered the foundations of headstand, the next progression is to explore the variations. This is where your inversions practice comes to life. And the foundations become vital—using alignment, awareness & control to support your body as you move through transitions and hold each variation with comfort and control.

Practising headstand for 30 seconds and quickly moving through different leg positions is a very different situation from holding a 5 minute headstand then transitioning slowly into each variation.

In the first instance, strength can cover a lot of blindspots and missing parts. In the latter, there’s nowhere to hide. To move smoothly from one pose to the next, you need the precise method and full picture that aligns with the exact mechanics of each asana.

This is where the skill lies in inversions. And this is exactly what you’ll discover and gain during this 1-day intensive.

What You’ll Learn

Throughout this hands-on day of exploration, you’ll uncover new techniques and principles that will revolutionise your practice. You’ll see inversions through a completely new lens, deepening your understanding and receive guidance and support to unlock your next phase of practice.

This immersion is not just about improving your asana practice; it’s about understanding the exact mechanics, principles and methodology that will help you move into and hold each variation with greater ease and control.

And if you teach asana, you’ll leave with incredible tools to elevate how you support your students in these more complex practices.

The Day’s Structure

This immersive day will be split into two parts, focusing on both headstand variations and transitions into hand balances.

Part 1: Sirsasana I and Variations: Moving and Aligning to Gravity

From the base of Sirsasana I (headstand), you’ll explore in detail the mechanics, alignment, and method to fully experience the following variations:

  • Ekapada Sirsasana

  • Urdhva Dandasana

  • Parivrtta Sirsasana

  • Parivrttaikapada Sirsasana

  • Parvaikapada Sirsasana

  • Urdhva Padma Sirsasana

  • Parivrtta Urdhva Padma Sirsasana

  • Pinda Sirsasana

  • Vajra / Parivrtta Vajra Sirsasana

  • Sirsasana Drop backs

  • Sirsasana II Transitions

Part 2: Sirsasana II & The Bakasana’s: Flight School

In the second half of the day, we’ll explore how to gracefully and skilfully transition from Sirsasana II into the Bakasana series of hand balances with precision, awareness and control. You’ll learn how to transition smoothly and support others with:

  • Traditional / Classical Bakasana (not the version commonly practised in modern yoga classes)

  • Parsva Bakasana

  • Ekapada Bakasana I

  • Ekapada Bakasana II

  • Urdhva Kukkutasana

  • Galavasana

Each asana variation will be explained in depth, with focus on key body mechanics, alignment, and techniques that will elevate your practice.

This will be hands-on experiential learning. You’ll be working with fellow participants to support each other, ensuring a deeper understanding of each asana.

What You’ll Walk Away With

By the end of this intensive, you’ll have:

  • A deeper understanding of headstand & hand balance variations.

  • New techniques to move through inversions with more control, fluidity, and precision.

  • Insights into how alignment and technique reduces reliance on physical strength.

  • A new approach to inversions that you can immediately integrate into your practice and teaching.

  • Confidence in holding and transitioning between postures with ease and awareness.

And if you’re a teacher, you’ll have new tools to offer your students—empowering them to break through their own barriers and take their practice to the next level.

As one of the few students to complete Dona Holleman’s Advanced Training, Rory brings a wealth of knowledge, passion, and experience to this course. His approach integrates precise technique, body awareness, and a deep understanding of Yoga’s spiritual and energetic roots.

  • “There are Yoga teachers and then there are teachers of Yoga. Rory belongs to the latter group… I always learn something new; and, I really mean always. He teaches new ways to get into an asana, ways to become aware of and awaken muscle groups you never knew existed, and to relax and become confident in your body. Rory has a wealth of knowledge of the human body that he’s most skilled in articulating and sharing for a more embodied way of being in the world (not just on the mat)”

    Jackie - Yoga Practitioner

  • "Dory and Rory are, without doubt, two of the most dedicated and authentic yoga teachers I have come across and it is an absolute privilege to be taught and guided by them”

    Louise - Yoga Practitioner

  • "Learning with Rory and Dory feels like learning with old friends - I trust them to make me feel safe, I know they have my best interests at heart, they offer challenge when you need it, but it is always a relaxing experience to spend time with them"
