Imposter Syndrome: being an exceptional anatomy teach doesn’t automatically make you an exceptional Yoga teacher (or even a good one)

A common concern many Yoga teachers bring to our table is imposter syndrome

Some feel intimidated by Yoga Teachers, who’ve a background in anatomy, leverage their anatomical skill to elevate their Yoga Teaching authority (business coaches will tell you its finding your niche!)

Here’s the thing
Because a botanist knows everything there is about certain plants it doesn’t automatically make them an exceptional plant based chef

You absolutely need to know what you are doing when teaching Yoga, nothing should be taken to chance
Everything you teach should be embodied through regular practise (this is what many Yoga teachers should focus more on rather than ‘acquiring more knowledge’)

You absolutely can be a more exceptional Yoga teacher than another Teacher who has higher anatomy credentials

There are many threads to teaching Yoga, anatomy is only one and doesn’t give you a green card to exceptional Yoga teacher status (or guarantees you make the right decision)

Many of my students are doctors, physicians, surgeons, scientists, neurologists, osteopaths
They’ve far superior knowledge than me in their specialisms

But boy can I teach them Yoga!

Why?

1. I’ve consistently spent a longtime learning from the absolute best
2. I spend sufficient time practising daily to embody the practice so the teaching is inside my body, not just encyclopaedic information that only comes from the brain/memory

I’ve got things wrong. I’ve relearnt, questioned, reflected, updated my opinions & rationale
I’ve had periods where I question if I know enough - it’s part of being human

You can be an expert in anatomy & an expert at teaching Yoga
You can be an anatomy expert & a terrible Yoga teacher
One does not equate to the other (insert anything here ex-dancer, gymnast, phycologist, biologist)

Practice
Have confidence in what you practice
Share what you practice
Keep learning
Always remember why you practise (& what its done for your life)

There’ll always be someone who has superior knowledge about something than you
There’ll always be someone who’ll receive life-changing support from what you already practice & embody

Trust yourself 🤛
