Dory Walker
Dory has been teaching yoga for 20 years. She started practising in the late 1990’s while at University. Her very first classes were Iyengar classes at the Buddhist centre in Brighton, but it wasn’t until a couple of years later living in London and attending classes that included mantra chanting that kindled her desire to learn more.
Three months after finishing University Dory took her first Yoga Teacher Training Course in New York, the rest as they say is history. Back in London in late 2001 Dory started teaching and at the same time spend 2 years daily practising Mysore style astanga yoga with Alex Medin at what used to be E2 Yoga place in Bethnal Green.
In 2002 Dory came across the book ‘Dancing the Body of Light’ by Dona Holleman which had a profound effect on her approach to practise. It wasn’t until 2012 that she got to study with Dona and continues to do so today. Dona was one of B.K.S Iyengar's first western students in the early 1960’s and Dona is widely regarded as one of the worlds top authorities on yoga asana.
In 2004 Dory left for India to do another Teacher Training, spending the next 7 years living between Canada, India and Egypt, with a total of 3 years in the Sivananda Ashrams in Canada and Kerala (about 6 month a year over 7 years)
Inspired and fascinated by the yogic scriptures, Dory's love of yoga philosophy was brought off the page when she began a Vedic Chanting practise in 2013, it made the Vedic teachings come alive. Philosophy and chanting are central in Dory's practise and teaching. A qualified Vedic Chant teacher in the Krishnamacharya Lineage Dory continues weekly classes with her own teacher.
Yearly trips to India and lots of ashram living was fuel that drove the first 15 years of Dory's teaching career, rooted her in tradition, with a respect for lineage and a hunger for Source knowledge.
Since moving to Bristol in 2011 Dory and Rory have nurtured and expanded the offerings of Yogakutir.
Dory believes in the power of yoga for deep transformation and its significant role in birthing a brighter future.
